When indexing goes wrong: how Google Search recovered from indexing issues & lessons learned since.

Vincent Courson, Google Search Outreach, has written a blog post about Google’s search indexing problems of late, how it fixed them and lessons it has learned. In the post, Google explained some of the recent indexing issues the company had over the past few months. This includes the indexing issue with new content from last Thursday, a similar issue from last May and Google de-indexing sites from back in April.

Google Considers Notifying Webmasters For Featured Snippet Penalties

Sometimes Google may remove a featured snippet from showing in the search results because it doesn’t comply with its own internal policies or guidelines. Google currently does not notify webmasters when such a removal happens but Danny Sullivan from Google said the company is considering doing so.

Google is aware of sites hosted on another’s subdomain

Google has stated that hosting content in a subdomain or subfolder of another entity’s site is not against its guidelines, but that it is improving its systems to recognize that content and treat it accordingly. The statement was delivered via the Google Webmasters Twitter account.

We’ll surface these episodes based on Google’s understanding of what’s being talked about on a podcast, so you can find even more relevant information about a topic in audio form. Soon, you won’t necessarily need the term “podcast” in your search to see episodes, making podcast discovery simpler across Search.

Google’s indexing issues are resolved

Google’s indexing issues are resolved and Google is once again able to both crawl, index and rank fresh new content within minutes. Google has now officially confirmed this. Recently, Google stopped showing fresh content in its search results. If you filtered the news or web search results for content from sites that published content frequently, it would only show you content from before around 3am ET on August 8th. This was similar to the indexing issues from this past May.

Google: We Do Not Index Parts Of A Page Independently

Some may speculate that Google doesn’t just index a URL and the content on that URL as a whole, but may index parts of a page independently. That is not true, Google’s John Mueller said on Twitter “We don’t index parts of a page independently, we index the pages as a whole, and try to understand the context of the content there.”

An update on Android for search providers in Europe

Google is introducing a new search engine “choice screen” in Europe for Android users. It’s reminiscent of what Microsoft was compelled to do roughly a decade ago, to offer “browser choice” on the desktop in Europe. Part of antitrust compliance. This comes as part of Google’s effort to comply with the European Commission’s (EC’s) July, 2018 antitrust decision involving Android and app bundling. Google has appealed the decision and the associated roughly $5 billion fine. Starting in 2020, when Android users set up their devices they’ll be presented with a version of the following screen. Google says providers will potentially vary by country.

Why Google dropped Bing Discover pages from its index

Recently, Google dropped a subset of Bing’s website from its index. The Bing Discover pages were completely dropped out of Google’s search results and resulted in Bing losing millions of pageviews from Google search. Google’s webmaster guidelines say, “Use the robots.txt file on your web server to manage your crawling budget by preventing crawling of infinite spaces such as search result pages.” Google specifically has said for a long time they do not want search results in its search results. And Bing Discover was just that.

How we keep Search relevant and useful

Danny Sullivan from Google published a blog post saying Google made 3,200 changes to its search systems last year. Google also informed us they updated the how search works data with that a few months ago. That is about 9 changes per day to search. How many of those changes are core ranking versus changing the pixel location of the search box or font sizes is unknown.
